Weather Warnings Issued for Nova Scotia as Heavy Rain Causes Flooding

Torrential Rain Floods Basements, Washes Out Roads and Bridges

An almost stationary band of heavy showers and thunderstorms has developed over Victoria County Cape, bringing torrential rain that has flooded basements and washed out roads and bridges in western Cape Breton and southwestern Nova Scotia.

A flash flood alert was issued for Digby Annapolis Kings and Hants counties Thursday evening as Environment Canada has Antigonish County Guysborough County and all of Cape Breton Island under a rainfall warning.

The heaviest rain to hit the Atlantic Canadian province of Nova Scotia in years has caused widespread flooding, with some areas receiving up to 200 millimetres of rain in just a few hours.

A strong fall storm that blew through Halifax on Monday night has hammered parts of Cape Breton, with high winds and heavy rain causing power outages and flooding.

Environment Canada Issues Alerts for Affected Areas

When severe weather threatens, Environment Canada issues alerts that notify those in affected areas of the potential dangers. These alerts can include warnings for tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and other hazardous weather conditions.
