Jeremy Corbyn: From Labour Leader to Independent Candidate

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Jeremy Bernard Corbyn (born 26 May 1949) is a British politician who was Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party from 2015 to 2020. He is currently an Independent Parliamentary Candidate.

Labour Leadership

Corbyn, a Labour member since his teenage years, became leader of the party in 2015. During his tenure, the party faced significant divisions and turbulence, but he also gained support from a growing left-wing membership.

2017 General Election

Corbyn led Labour into the 2017 general election against the incumbent Conservative Prime Minister, Theresa May. Despite expectations of a significant Conservative majority, Labour performed better than anticipated, reducing the Conservative lead in Parliament.

2019 General Election

In the 2019 general election, Labour under Corbyn suffered a heavy defeat to the Conservatives led by Boris Johnson. Corbyn subsequently resigned as Labour leader.

Current Status

Following his resignation as Labour leader, Corbyn was suspended from the party over his response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission report on antisemitism in Labour. He was later reinstated as a Labour member but sits as an Independent in Parliament.
