A Daughter Of Immigrants

Kamala Harris: A Family Story

A Daughter of Immigrants

As Vice President Kamala Harris emerges as the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, the spotlight has turned to her family's story. The tale of two immigrants who found opportunity in America is an inspiring one. Kamala's mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a biologist from India. Her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. Kamala's parents met at the University of California, Berkeley, and married in 1962. Kamala was born in Oakland, California, in 1964.

A Family of Firsts

Kamala Harris is the first woman of color to serve as Vice President of the United States. She is also the first woman and the first person of South Asian descent to serve as California's Attorney General. Kamala's mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was the first Indian-American woman to earn a PhD in nutrition and endocrinology. Her father, Donald Harris, was the first Jamaican-American to teach economics at Stanford University. Kamala's younger sister, Maya Harris, is a political commentator and author.
